Don Bullard

Before his storied career in insurance, Don Bullard served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army. After graduating from New Hanover High School in 1967, he joined the Army as a Warrant Officer Candidate and completed Army Flight School in 1968. His military service included three tours in Vietnam, where he served as a helicopter pilot. His bravery and skill earned him multiple honors, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Bronze Star, 36 Air Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, and a Purple Heart. Unfortunately, his military career was cut short when he was seriously injured during a mission in the A Shau Valley, leading to his eventual departure from the Army. Bullard’s commitment to service extended far beyond his military and professional careers. For more than five decades, he was an integral part of the Wilmington community. His leadership roles included serving as Past President of the Seartoma Club and Past Treasurer of the Port City Kiwanis, two organizations that play vital roles in supporting local charitable causes. His dedication to community service was evident in his volunteer work with organizations such as Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, United Way, and the Cape Fear Literacy Council. One of Don's most significant contributions to the community was his long-term commitment to tutoring a special needs student for 11 years. He provided not only educational support but also transportation and tuition assistance, helping the student successfully graduate high school alongside his peers. This act of kindness and dedication exemplified his character and his deep commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others. Now enjoying a well-earned retirement, Bullard spends his time traveling, boating, and cruising. As he reflects on his life, he takes pride in his professional achievements, military service, and the lasting impact he has made on the Wilmington community. His legacy of leadership and service continues to inspire those who know him, ensuring that his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
